comment ako

uy allan, wala ka namang k na magcomment sa last band. di mo naman sila napanood that night. tsktsk. don't rely on what other people say, even if you suspect it's so. let's be fair.

___

i was shocked about Bella Tan. i didn't expect it.

here's what i have to say...

inspite of a very poor attendance during this month's buzz night, i still consider it quite a success... a personal one i guess. first was that the 4-piece candyaudioline line-up was really good. i had so much fun watching my own band performing that i found it not neccessary anymore to participate in the last to songs that we did. although things don't end there. we still have to work on the high pitched songs that selena find quite difficult to execute. second was that superminty is slowly coming on it's own. the songs have improved since kiel (also drummer of candyaudioline) stepped in... sunsetdrive also had a great set inspite of being just a 3 piece that night. it just goes to show that the bands are becoming more and more flexible and are able to cope with situations wherein you get to miss a band member during a gig... the first band (swim dons) was quite pleasing instrumentally but when the vocals kicks in... as for poopoovox, ewan ko ba? but the vocalist sang well that night save for the 3rd song where he went a bit too "MACHOCORE" for his own good... tether was the band of the night pero muntik na nila masira yung respeto ko when they did that nirvana thing... as for the last band whom i shall call "the failure project", ewan ko ba... attention Julius Santos (my ex-candy, minty and pillow guitarist)who is now playing guitar for that band... ano ba yan chong!!!

velvet and bad days for mary didn't show up...

to my dear candyaudioline bassist ayn... the first time i saw sunsetdrive, they immediately reminded me of early superchunk specially the guitars and the fast aggressive tempos of their songs.although mas manipis ang tunog nag superchunk and barely falset-ic? yung vox nila... being friends with me won't assure anyone a slot at buzz night. it just so happen that i like what they are doing. at tingin ko kahit paano swak sila sa buzz night...

ps...

the music industry has suffered a major loss last night when Ms. Bella Tan of Universal Records passed away at around 11:45pm due to cancer... my condolences to her family and loved ones...

BZZZ...

I kinda feel this is redundant, and i don't have much time to post, either, but i'll try to say something about last Saturday.

I can't make up my mind about Swin Dons and Poopoo Vox (who is actually Chito From Outer Space, so said someone). The first band was lined up by Joel, who technically was supposed to man Buzz Night. This band alternately made me shake and nod my head. On one hand, their instruments were pretty good; but the vocals were sometimes appropriate and sometimes not. My wishy-washiness also applies to Poopoo Vox. Sometimes they sound really good to me, at other times, they kind of miss the mark. I'm thinking it might be merely personal taste... in that case, then these bands are doing ok, cuz you can't please everyone anyway. But if it's an underlying Buzz Night elitism, then there are two sides to that... let's not get into the gory stuff, but I guess, in short, it means we're still trying to go for some form of quality control.

It's from hanging out too much with Allan.

Anyway, I liked Sunset's three-piece, contrary to how everyone else feels (Allan and Ekong like four). I don't know. I enjoyed it.

My Science Project's easy approach has paid off. I'm sure they'll get even better soon.

I enjoyed the candyaudioline set. Any regrets are all on my part because I knew I was much better during practices and so I came down a little hard on myself for tiny mishaps.

don't believe i played? i really did!

As for my bandmates, however, they did great and many thanks go to them for the great teamwork.

Allan did say that we did well and that we could stand alone at gigs if he ever couldn't make it. That's the trust I was hoping for.

we did play with him on "we've been there", though. faaantastic.

Tether. Oh man. With a little tweaking on the vocals, they will most definitely be a phenomenon. They were such a force on the stage, and you could tell everyone was wowed. I was joking Dennis after their set, "Sabotage!" cuz he was amazing ;) But we're all really proud of them.

I may have forgotten someone/thing, but I have to get back to work.

Broken Social Scene

(A single cent worth)

The usual bands played except for the first one. I liked the last song of this first band (I don’t remember their name) which sort of had this beatle-esque feel—Sgt. Pepper era. Other than that song, the others were too mainstream-ish for my taste.

Second band was Sunset Drive. Soundwise, this is one band that I can see myself listening to every now and then (but not during Buzznites). However, I have yet to reconcile my personal preference with the vocals—it reminded me of the sound UP Maroons men make at the gym when they’re trying to lift their 30-40+ lbs. barbells. No offense but really—images of them started dancing in my head all throughout the set. Also, I still can hardly place them at a gig like Buzznite. Maybe it’s more of in the "spirit of camaraderie" that placed them there regularly. (I love you Allan)

We stepped onstage right after them. This time, Selena played the guitars in place of Allan who only played for the last two songs. We’re trying to rehearse lately for gigs wherein Allan won’t be available because of his managing stints.

Not to conjure old demons—the Superminty set was a bit reminiscent of the old Buzznite bands sound and it was good. Amidst the indie-popish undertones, the keyboards added a more atmospheric feel to the songs. Which reminded me how Caudioline also used to have keyboards (courtesy of Eloha who contributed a lot to our "Broken to Pieces" era). That was the time when we switched to standard tunings. I don’t know why we haven’t gone back to the half-drop tunings since we let go of the keyboards part.

Tether did an awesome set as always. This time the vocals can be heard and the guitar-parts are improving every Buzznite. BTW, I read from Joel’s friendster profile that he’s the “candyaudioline bassist.” Are you sure? I’m telling you right now, that didn’t quite amuse me.

My mind was someplace else during Poopoo Vox’s set. Perdon.

By the time My Science Project went onstage, I was already anticipating for the gig to end but here’s my comment on them—KONTI NALANG SUPERMINTY NA KAYO. Peace tayo Dennis.

Selena and I had late dinner at Mister Kebab. Friends/cumares from Death by Tampon were there too, together with Vin and Jason of Twisted Halo. It was nice meeting Mich, Lara and Goldie at the most ungodly hour. They perked up the place with their presence.

pic announcement

hey guys, i've just uploaded pics from last night's Buzz. Please retrieve them from the candyaudioline egroups (candyaudioline@yahoogroups.com) web site. i didn't send them through email. too many. tsaka mostly candyaudioline kasi.

i've also uploaded pics from superminty gatherings, though none of us actually playing hehehe.

anyway, i'll post about last night soon. meanwhile, you can all give your two cents' worth first :)

come. let me bore you.

since i don't have a personal blog anymore, i'll just type all my stuff here. mwaha.

i woke up really late this morning. guess all my fatigue caught up with me. but i figured i still had a chance not to be late. wrong. the mrt trains were late... not only that, the cubao station got clogged up because the doors of the train in front of ours broke down because people kept keeping them from closing. yet another fine example of human intelligence...

and, of course, i was late. damn. deductions, i don't deserve.

on the other hand, i had a pretty fun day. it was a co-worker's birthday and our friends made this elaborate hoax just to spice things up for him. they pretended to set him up on a blind date (which turned out to be a cardboard cut-out of natalie portman's face) and we all ended up eating at this really great indian restaurant. yum. then, back at the office, we almost crashed our servers with a really long office loop that left us breathless with laughter in our seats.

then things kinda took a downturn as i realized that i had an interview on monday morning for which i had to do research over the weekend. goodbye, restful weekend (because tomorrow is booked with tad's graduation and buzz night in the evening). *sigh*

+++

i'm really looking forward to tomorrow night.

+++

not three days since i deleted my blog and i'm thinking of jumping on the bandwagon and starting a friendster blog. on the other hand, that's so cheeeeeesy! it's fricking friendster, man!

and besides... i love blogger. *mwah*

or, to be pinoy, *tsup*

APRIL Buzz Night

Image hosted by Photobucket.com

see you all there...

stolen phone

Allan's phone was stolen this morning, along with his prized walkman. So if anybody's been trying to contact him, tough luck :P It is hoped the phone is insured and he'll be given a replacement soon.

finally, i had the time to delete my blog.

i was gonna talk about more stuff, but i'm currently experiencing the worst of womanhood right now and the pain is enough to numb my brain cells against smart thoughts.

oh yeah. allan gave me some cds last week: bloc party, arcade fire, broken social scene and snow patrol. really great. i wasn't expecting to think that about the last one either, but they surprised me.

dance! dance! dance!

actually...

the guy said we reminded him of jesus and mary chain, not the pixies. it looked like he really enjoyed our set last night because he thought it was such a blast from the past.

our set was something else last night, huh? i didn't even expect for it to turn out like that because i had been feeling a bit tired and depressed and i was afraid that it would show. i don't know... maybe i was so determined to counter it that i finally did it right, for once. i hope it stays. and i agree that singing while playing guitar helped me. and of course, everyone else did great. and i'd like to thank roel for being a sport about everything, too, even amidst teasing from other friends. well, i don't know what he says behind our backs, but i appreciate his civility and smiles to our faces.

anyway, i hope it goes on. pats on backs all around...

brandnewaudioline...

last night was really something for me... all my patience and the band's hard work has finally paid-off...

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, BOYS AND GIRLS, I present to you CANDYAUDIOLINE... and this one's far better than the last one...

Last night's gig is a solid testimonial to what we should have been a long time ago - tight, confident and very much IN CONTROL. sure there were some lapses, specially by the two new members but the were very few and so easy to ignore.

kel (drummer) was really impressive... very fluid and so full of dynamics giving each part of every song it's own distinct character... unlike before wherein the songs were very much similar to a never ending highway, last night they were like rollercoasters... he actually made my hipswing for a while...

dennis (guitars) played his part so well, note for note plus a few improvisations of his own... the sounds that he was able to pull-off was, for me, very stunning. there were parts somewhere in "we've been there" and "my silver chair" wherein i got lost because i was mesmerised by the soundscapes that were coming out from his amp.

ayn too was a bit different last night, she was the "bassist" that night. not a single question from her nor the usual "allan dinig ba ako kanina?". i guess she has finally come to a point wherein she knows what she's supposed to do and that there are only the three of us (me, selena and ayn) remnants from the previous line-up that is responsible to show the newbies how things are at candyaudioline...

selena on the otherhand played her part to almost near perfection. her singing was very relaxed, the words were delivered the way i was hoping she would for very long time now (i think that practicing while playing guitar did help her a bit) she was talking to crowd as if it was a crowd of our own. and she was even dancing in proper timing (courtesy of kel's consistency). as for

me, inspite of having back problems that made me sit during the instrumental parts of each song, really had a very swell time watching my bandmates do their own thing...

there's only one regret that i have with this line-up and that is i am only sharing dennis with another band called tether (also another great young band that people should watch out for). well i guess i just have to settle with that...

special thanks to joel (session bass player for candyaudioline and superminty) bassist of tether, for lending us his bass and making sure that we sounded right during last night's set.

i will end my entry with this quote from myself:

"being a member of candyaudioline, i consider myself to be very lucky and unlucky at the same time. lucky because i'm part of one of the best things that ever happened to music, unlucky because i may never be able to witness it (candyaudioline) live".

pahabol... out of a number of positive comments i heard about our set last night, here are some i found quite rewarding and amazing at the same time:

"mas magaling yung drummer nyo ngayon" - allan kamikazee

"are those your songs, wow! i'll be leaving for the US tomorrow, do you a CD out?..." - 30 something long-haired guy who offered me vodka...

"kuya saan pa po kayo tumutugtog?" - emo kid wearing tretorn sneakers...

"you guys remind me of the Pixies" - somebody said that to selena.

see you this buzz night!!! April 23 @ Mayrics...

nasanay lang kayo...

hahaha! nasanay lang kayo!!!

ako talaga ang gem ng candyaudioline... kahit sinong gitarista pa ilagay ko dyan as long as he likes the music or kahit na konti, would be able to appreciate it at makikinig lang sa akin ay siguradong makakapaglagay din sya ng magagandang sounds/riffs na mas makakapag-papaganda pa sa "already BEAUTIFUL songs koh" oh say nyo? walang kokontra, nagsasabi lang ako ng totoo.

history will prove me right and so will the future... from kelvin then AJ then Joey who had a very hard time surpassing AJ's mark, then Ralph. Charles is now able to do what Ralph has done and even better kaya lang he decided to pass the responsibilty to Dennis who's been able to do so a bit earlier than i expected... he's even adding some more to it...

seriouly, everything was due to good chemistry... during the early years of that line-up, everyone listened to me and in-turn was able to produce their own stuff which was (although not always) agreeable to what i was expecting from them... my detractors usually see me as a dictator when it come to my bands... TANGA LANG SILA!!! democratic ako noh!!! i'll let them try out their own ideas and would decide whether this one or that fits or not. oftentimes i give suggestions but would encourage my bandmates to make something more out of that suggestion... except for the vocals although i've tried letting all of my vocalists to suggest a melody. sa totoo lang naawa ako dun sa ibang nakaka-apreciate sa candy pero in an individualized level... example "hanep naman yung palong yun" or yung "paano mo ginawa yung tunog ng gitara mo"... wala lang.

okey, i'll let out something na d ko na sana kailangan sabihin pero here goes... it has something to do with ayn's bass lines. actually until recently, d talaga ako solve sa basslines sa ilang mga kanta namin. when i got joel to session for us i thought he'll be able to supply me with the basslines that i wanted to hear pero mukang iba rin yung orientation ni joel. nung tumugtog kami last april 11 sa mayrics doon ko narealize napaka-steady pala at very deciplined ng basslines (pwera lang sa we've been there) at bass playing nya (Ayn). malas lang ni ayn dahil bass lang sya, nagmuka tuloy pogi sina kel at dennis. Dahil sa bass playing ni ayn nabawasan ang pagka-chaotic ni kel at nag mukang perfect ang timing ni dennis sa mga adlibs nya. what more pa kaya if we get to seriously practice together pero malabo kasi nga yung mga sched natin d magkasundo...

hay naku... napagod ako dun.. GEMS do get tired sometimes...

buzz night is on the 23 of this month... so far eto so far yung line up:

velvet
sunsetdrive
tether
populardays
candyaudioline
superminty (if then won't let me play guitars for candy)

Me On Guitars at Practice

Last night, Alan dragged me out of bed at 11pm so I could practice with me on guitars in preparation for Buzz Night. I was so tired and sleepy that I couldn’t even change into decent clothes and instead pulled a blazer over my pajama tank and blue board shorts, hoping that nobody would notice I lacked a certain fundamental article of clothing. I slunk into the taxi and snored through the ride to Sam’s.

Ayn couldn’t make it because it was too late, so Joel took over her bass duties first. I didn’t even see the guys waiting in the “lobby” until they laughed a “good morning” at me because of my wrecked appearance. Ah well. The practice was important, but I only had enough brain cells to think about playing guitar and none left for dressing up.

It was very difficult to get used to the weight of an electric guitar and pushing the effects with my foot at the right moments. It took me forever to learn. What everyone else does is no easy task, after all, and it’s even worse when you try to sing while doing it. But somehow, I got through, with Allan supervising my progress and teaching me the weird stuff he does on songs like “My Silver Chair” and other songs. I felt most secure playing “An Empty You” and, surprisingly, “Felt So Fine.” But I’m confident I can pull through the others with more practice.

Fortunately, the guys were patient with me. But I promise that it will all pay off. Another practice will do the trick, and I hope I can practice with Ayn there, too. It’s pleasantly challenging.

+++

About that last post…

Yeah, I agree with you, Ayn. Ralph has an x-factor, and a lot of people noticed it when he was still playing with us. Many times, we did explicitly state that Ralph was the gem of candyaudioline. I hope we can someday patch things up with him—if not about band matters, then just as a friend and kumpare.

I’m also optimistic about Dennis, who has kindly stepped up to the plate. He’s very talented, and I can see him contributing a lot to the band’s future projects, as did the former guitarists. Maybe we can move forward. But I’m also content with what we’ve been having so far (although it’s mostly because I can foresee us moving forward hehe). Anyway, I hope we continue to stay in touch.

Metamorphosis

We played around 5 or 6 songs at Mayric's. It was only at that gig when I realized that our move, in replacing our old drummer with a new one, was really for the better. Most of our songs came to life. Before starting our set, I whispered to Ezekiel, "Kiel, anjan si Roel, 'wag mo kami pahihiyain ha." He only replied with a smile. At the end of our set, I figured that there really was no need for me to remind him about that. He can play for us real well without even trying. The situation was pretty ironic to think that Roel was even there to witness our metamorphosis.

Our new guitarist did well too but he still needs a bit of tweaking here and there. Although he played really well (mind you), there is this certain "it" that I'm still looking for. I must say that our old guitarist, Ralph, is one guy who is so hard to substitute for and/or trade in for another. There's something about his guitar playing that is almost impossible to be captured by another guitarist. There had been countless gigs where we managed to leave other bands with their jaws dropped to the floor and the reason for all that was Ralph. Admittedly, he was our gem (not to mention that he’s also my daughter’s godfather) and I kinda miss having him as our guitarist. But some things just took place and it was quite inevitable in the end for some things to change. Sometimes I find myself wishing that those things didn’t happen, that I had the chance to intervene and change his mind--but I guess it’s useless for me to feel that now and I must try to adapt with Allan’s optimism.

Who knows--in time, perhaps, Dennis can surpass whatever it is that Ralph has accomplished.

april 11 mayric's

after work, ayn picked me up in makati and we headed to the backbeat office to see allan. he was sort of sleeping when we arrived so he asked for us to wait for half an hour before we all left to have dinner at hemady. but the boss came out after that and they started having a business meeting, so we weren't able to leave until 8 pm. ayn and i were so hungry the whole time but we had to content ourselves with just staring at that empty space on the wall we had designated for our pink plaque award.

the three of us had dinner at 77. buttered chicken and spicy beef. mmm. sobrang sulit talaga dun. before we knew it, though, it was 9:30 and we had to rush to mayric's. kiel arrived soon after we did, but dennis was late. he was reportedly off "gallivanting" with charles (doing what, we could only guess... probably something involving women), but where exactly, nobody knew. finally, he arrived and all he had to do was lovingly caress allan's arm to win him over, and we were off.

we had a very shoegazy sound last night because the guitars sounded very fuzzy and kiel's beats sounded slower and (it seemed to me) full of reverb (weird). it was cool, though. also, i was able to sing relaxed, though these loud drunks in the front kept heckling us about the volume of the vocals and saying, "yeheeeyyyy... wow pareh, di naman namin naintindihaaan." it was a breakthrough for me because i didn't really let my temper flare the way it always used to in situations like that. i kind of chuckled to myself and ignored them, no matter how much they clamored for volume. the whole crowd kind of wound down and retreated into a stupor because they were there for the upbeat bands and the whole weirdness of our set seemed too much. but the rest of us thought it was good.

on my way down after the set, those guys were making snide comments and it turned out that i wasn't entirely unaffected because i could not resist throwing my used tissue paper over my shoulder at them. hehe.

we hung out for a while outside and talked, then ayn took me home.

Rehearsals Onstage

Earlier this night, We had "live rehearsals." We had a hard time looking for a studio to rehearse in--MRS was fully booked and for some reason we couldn't practice at Alberto's. Our last resort was to use the studio upstairs of Mayric's. We spent a lot of time waiting for the guy who was manning the studio but he never arrived so we ended up practicing on stage and was done with it just in time before people started flowing inside Mayric's for SGS. Selena said something like, "para narin tayong tumugtog," right after we stepped off the stage. Yeah, the only thing missing then was a packed venue. I believe that was the second time for the band to practice on stage at Mayric's.

We all had to rush some place else after the rehearsals. I dropped off Selena at Maryland and Allan (together with our two new bandmates and Charles) at Marikina for his work. I, on the other hand, had to rush back home to finish what I was typing before I left.

yahoo.

i wrote in my blog yesterday that i was really happy about yahoo's launchcast because i could expose myself to more music. it's heeeeaaveeeehhhnnnn...

so... wala lang.

i was just gonna say that Buzz Night this April will be on the 23rd of the month, at Mayric's, as usual. Candyaudioline is playing. The full lineup is to follow.

Ayn is still quite busy with law school so our planned beach vacation has been postponed. oh well. no worries. there are pretty easy and nifty ways to experience the summer even on short notice.
we've been practicing lately. we'll be ready for the 23rd. Allan will not be playing then, so it might be Charles or I who'll be taking his place for Buzz Night. Now that will be interesting.
