At last, Something To Smile About... (Part 1)

hello everyone!

last night was one of the most memorable and enjoyable gig night i had in recent memory...
yesterday, soft pillow kisses was slated to play two gigs. one at 6 underground in makati and the other one at mayrics in españa...
that afternoon, so many things happened that got me really tense going into both gigs... there were so many problems here, there and everywhere that led me to think that it wasn't going to be a happy year ender for me.
our backbeat secretary had texted me about a missing envelop containing a very large sum of money. worse, the "katiwala" at the office claimed that i picked it up yesterday afternoon at the office. how can that be when i was at home sleeping - by the time i woke up at around 4pm i was still so pre-occupied worrying whether arjay would show up on time or not - i have lots of money... not my problem anymore...
arjay did show up and i thought that things will go on smoothly from that point on... then another dilemna came up. one of our backbeat staff texted me that he could not make it to the m88 gig at 6UG because he was still nursing from a dislocated knee... this was a very big problem indeed because it somewhat disrupted my plans on how i were to handle both gigs at the same time...
then mavi texted me that she wanted to go to mayrics after her dinner commitment... this gave me an idea to let her manage the whole mayrics proceedings while i'm attending to m88 at 6UG... she agreed but she told me that she wasn't sure if she could make it by 10pm... so i thought of another option and jenny (gish's manager) was the best one. i wasted no time calling her and to my relief she happily agreed... i texted mavi that i already found someone to handle the mayrics gig and that there's no need for her to rush to mayrics...
still i had to look for roadies to attend to m88 at 6UG. i called up kel and he agreed not only to roadie but to act as road manager for m88 if ever the need for me to rush to mayrics comes. i had dennis assist him... so all problems solved at around 7:30pm we (charles, arjay, dennis and i) left the house for greenbelt 3 where we were to meet up with janpol and eloha. on our way, apol texted me that she wanted to leave her place early so i told her to meet us at m1...
i bought 3 cd's at m1. trembling blue stars' "broken by whispers", "lip's that taste of tears" and "her handwriting"... everyone was there by 9pm then we proceeded to 6UG via the walk way connecting greenbelt to HSBC... by the we got to the venue, me and apol were breathing our lungs out. i though i'd get cramps but... our real call time was at around 8:30pm. we got there at around 9:30pm and to my surprise... walang tao!!! i asked the venue coordinator, trish, if we could start playing na. she told us to wait for paramitha to be completed so we waited... during the long wait we spend our time smoking, chatting, eating the complimentary band meal made up of assorted pika-pika which was quite good. it was only apol who seemed not to be enjoying the whole proceeding because every item that she wasn't available so she settled for some nachos and this really spicy pringgles chips that was later confiscated from us... guess what? we even had time to do sound check... i received a text message from ayie of kings and pawns telling me that they'd be playing but will be coming in a little late because they had to wait for their bassist which was just coming back from the province. this got me excited and really smiling...
at around 10:30pm, soft pillow kisses came on stage. we started playing to about 30 people and by the time we finished our first song "bathing in the sun", the venue was already full... it was really a great set... the best we had this year only to be equalled by the one which we'll have soon after at mayrics. that one with apol doing the vocal chores... the crowd really liked us specially on the songs like "stay here for a while", "i was right", "it will never last (forever)", "wasting opportunities" and most specially "stolen flowers"... we were to play only 5 songs but the "feel" of that moment made me decide to let the people enjoy us a little bit more... we all left the stage in high spirits but i had to cut the euphoria short for i had to make them rush to mayrics with me just waiting for m88 to start their set. it was already 12:01am when i left 6UG leaving behind dennis and kel to attend to m88 them selves...
traffic was really heavy and it took me more than 30 minutes to reach mayrics...

i have to stop here muna... sa next entry ko nalang itutuloy... may mga bisitang dumating and i have to attend to them... cguro after putukan ko itutuloy...

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU!!! GOD BLESS!!!

My First Step To... I don't Know Where?

hello! anyone!

we've all been very quiet lately, each of us have our own reasons for being so... i for one have been trying to deal with one of life's most cruel joke. sadly i am still failing... seems like everything is drifting away from me... do you know how it feels?

2005 started out for me like a drift in still waters. full of possibilities and promises. as days and months passed by, i suddenly realized that i was all ready in the middle of a big storm. being the optimistic fool that i am, i just laughed at it all. believing that for every bad thing that comes my way, something good will eventually follow. so there i was, greeting each trial with arms wide open. but everytime i get to jump a hurdle, it's either i get to land on the wrong foot or get rammed by a great big wall. that was how it was for me during the middle of this year... but i was still able to pick myself up and move on... by the last quarter of 2005, things were beginning to pick up and it seemed that the promise of a smooth sailing was there after all. so i tried to savor every bit of it ignoring some bumps and occassional mildly rough waters... then all of a sudden, without the slightest hint, i was drifting towards a very big waterfall... so i fell and what's worst about it is that i don't know how to swim... enough of that!

today is the 30th day of the last month of this very cruel year... hopefully, i wish to see an end to this string of unfortunate events. what better way to do it than to do something which i once enjoyed doing the most...

tonight soft pillow kisses will be playing at two separate gigs. one at 6 underground in makati at around 9Pm and the other one at mayrics... even this exercise have hang-ups which until now is still hanging in the balance... the first one is trying to get bands to perform for mayrics at a very short notice because the venue was also awarded to me just last monday. that one was settled just last night. also the dilemna of not having a vocalist during pillow's mayrics gig. that was also settled last night with me getting apol (original pillow vocalist) to practice at my place, a few songs for tonight's mayrics gig (eloha will be the one doing the makati gig)... the only thing that's hanging in the balance is arjay's (current candy bassist) commitment to be on time, specially for 6 underground which i think will be very strick in time slots alloted for bands.

if you're not doing anything tonight i suggest you pass by one of the venues...

Putang-Inang 2005 Yan!!!

maraming naging intenal problems sa banda this year...

charles of popular days was always there to session for us during ralph's absence hanggang sa mag-quit sya...

ralph was able to watch one of our recent gig and we're both in speaking terms again and also with ayn whom i had a chance to visit last christmas with charles and dennis...

actually until now, candyaudioline is still sailing very rough waters. hopefully we'll be able to work things out the soonest possible time...

here are some non-candyaudioline items that made the year that was for us all...

wala na sa candy si ruel!!! yeepeeee!!!

tether lost three of their founding members while in the process of recording their ep but were still able to get great replacements...

poopoovox went awol...

sunsetdrive for a while was reduced to a three piece but are playing as a quartet...

my science project has improved a lot...

may panibago nang regular sa buzz night at ito ay ang kings and pawns (destroy MY heart!!! dun dun dun... dundundunt)

populardays are still as manyaks as ever... si janpol happy na kasi may syota na. si erik naman, ayon kay charles ay nag-papaka-melancholy...

still on erick popdays... paganda ng panganda yung mga posters na ginagawa nya... parang sunsilk!!!

buzz night was featured in one of the big name mags but it was also that magazine's farewell ish...

some very good bands with really great stuff grazed this year's buzz night. to name a few, we had easy mersey, bagetsafonik, los chupacabras, nycty nasty, sugar hiccup, massive action, velvet, shimmer, luscious dreams, orf, helen, sofiabolo, einstein chakras and grasspipe...

crowd attendance has grown since the latter half of this year

discoveries of the year!!!

kings and pawns!!!

qoutes of the year:

"i love you gado!" - from an unknown buzz nite patron...
"eh di bu-bungangain ko nalang..." dennis of tether and candyaudioline
"hindi na ako tao ngayon, wala na akong pera" - charles populardays...
"patingin naman ng mga titi ninyo oh"- ex-candy bassist...
"nagbago na ako, ang misyon ko'y dalhin ang mga kabanda ko sa tamang daan" - kel ng candy
(habang nag-mamalinis sa harap ng gelpren nya)
"charles, ang ganda ng hubog nun ah, sakto, parang hinulma" - dennis dizon

Correction Please!!!

hello everyone...

first of all let me correct one entry that i made from my last post. it's not jigger (tether drummer) who was rushed to the hospital last night... it was his sister and she's suffering from dengue. sorry to hear that jigs, we hope she get's well soon...

hmmm... how should i begin?

not much action for candyaudioline these days except for that forgettable UST gig last december 7 and a very exhausting buzz night performance last december 10... we haven't been practicing for quite sometime now... we are all very busy again with our own separate lives... kel as far as i know is been going back and forth to manila and bulacan to attend to some chores, arjay is oftentimes spending quality time with his girfriend in dasmariñas, cavite whenever he (and kel) is free from any moonstar88 obligations... dennis on the otherhand will be partially sidelined due to a recurring lung ailment. selena has been very busy with her work and at the same time preparing for their company's christmas party on the 15th of december... i myself have a handful of concerns like looking for rackets that would help me raise money to fund my compilation project which has currently been put on hold because of unavailabitlity of studio time. atleast most of the bands are nearly finished. also we have been very busy at backbeat. kamikazee had just been taken up by Universal Records, moonstar88 had just finished recording their album, cheese as i've learned is very well on it's way too... and so is the youth who is also about to release an album and a video... aside from those, i'm also very busy concerning myself
dealing with life's oftentime cruel style of dishing out jokes... for instance, how it is very possible something so sure to happen would not come to be in just a blink of an eye. or why is it that the wrong people always get their way. on a personal level, why do positive things come in very short and almost ignorable spurts while bad things rule life like a never ending bad story...
most of my friends see me as a very cynical person, well i'm just living my life that's all...

on a positive note, there are still a lot of things for me to look forward to like, dale's return to manila, the december 17 gig at las piñas, future gigs for both candy and pillow and the rest of my scenemates, christmas, christmas parties, christmas bonuses, gifts, new year's eve, new year's day, the release of the compilation, the demise of bands who make their living by sucking from other bands, the death of music piracy (i buy pirated dvd's because most of what i want isn't available here), the improvement in the taste of our local audience, the improvement in the standards of living for all of our unfortunate countrymen, the improvement in the roads and traffic in metro manila and in other parts of the country, the execution murderers, rapist, kidnappers and other criminals who don't deserve to live, the extinction of corrupt government officials, dumbass sexy-stars, pa-cute and bakya artistas, jologs and concert gatecrashers, the execution via electricution of political personalities and other public figures who are so pasikat and papasin when in fact tae lang naman cla... i'm also looking forward to the day wherein there'll be another jaworsky, fernando poe jr. ramon magsaysay, gloria romero, diomedes maturan, eddie perigrina, tito, vic and joey, dolphy, effren "bata" reyes, gabriel elorde, francisco balagtas, jose rizal, fr. sonny ramirez, joe cantada, eraserheads, the youth and allan siegfried t. montero (seryoso ako ha!!! sabay ngiting demonyo) (",), icons who truly deserves to called as such...

also, i'm also looking forward to the day wherein the Philippines will be up there, side by side with other countries interms of economic stability, morality, politically secure, with respectable military capabilities, well educated healthy citizens who'll value and respect each other's rights and existance... hay naku!!! inaantok na po ako...

sa totoo lang, malungkot ako ngayon, in english "heaven knows i'm miserrable now"...

by ther way, seyoso na ito, i'm looking for someone (a girl preferrably) to play bass for soft pillow kisses...

May Tsismis!!! INATAKE DAW AKO!!!

WOW HA!!!

exaggerated talaga...nag-palpitations lang ako... dala ng sobrang tension at pagod... i was in laguna attending to my backbeat chores during a moonstar88 and kamikazee gig in san pedro last friday when all of a sudden i felt some difficulty in breathing... i decided to go back to the band area and there i started to feel a bit unconfortable as if something was bothering me... actually, work related yung mga factors eh... it had something to do with both my breathing pati na yung pananakit ng ulo ko na medyo lumala dala na cguro ng pag-akyat ko sa di namang gaanong kataas na hagdan na di pantay ang mga baitang... nag-worry yung mga kasama ko kaya pati ako rin medyo nag-panic so i decided to have my blood pressure checked... hayun 140/100... pero nakakatawa yung situwasyon habang kinukunan ako ng BP may mga picture taking pa. kung may opportunity ako, i'll have them posted here... i decided to have my BP checked again... hayun 130/90, meaning normal pa rin... kinabahan din ako pero wala lang pala... yun lang...

sobrang late ako nakarating nung saturday sa buzz night to the point na candyaudioline had to do two songs with me and arjay sidelined just to catch our breath after that very long 3 hour-sort-of-suicidal trip from nueva ecija to manila after candyaudioline, soft pillow kisses followed next (actually, last band up at wala na talagang tao except for my candymates ang some of the mayrics crew) we just did for song and hurriedly went our own separate ways... first time na walang post buzz night-chibugan blues in more than 3 years... nakakalungkot pero pagod na talaga kami... bawi nalang next time... sabi nila okey daw ang the cactus garden pero puro covers nga lang daw. i'm looking forward to catch them live one of these days... sana may mga compositions na sila by that time...

i'm looking forward to the December 17 gig at las piñas... sana masaya at sulit... i really miss spending time with my bandmates and fellow scenemates...

by the way, sonnet58 guitarist, soft pillow kisses keyboardist, and apple orchard señor glamour boy dale marquez will be back in manila to check on his many girlfriends este panganays este for a very short vacation stint... malibre ka naman!!!

updates about the compilation: fully-booked and studio so we have to wait until maluwag na ulit ang scheds... tapos na ang candyaudioline at kings and pawns (mixing nalang), soft pillow kisses ay nagdagdag ng isa pang song. ganun din ang populardays at superminty drums pa lang at bass. ang my science project at up perriscope ay di pa nakakapasok sa studio. apple archard will be giving me two tracks na ni-record nila sa states. tether has been having problems again... (tether drummer) jigger was rushed to the hospital last night. (tether and candyaudioline guitarist) dennis will be resting for 2 months due to a recurring lung ailment... hay naku, buhay nga naman...
i had a chance to listen listen to ex-candy ruel's band Scarlet Tears ep... okey yung packaging, maganda yung sound quality, magaling yung singer - very rich yung voice nya, okey naman yung mga songs kaya lang, nababaduyan ako sa guitar playing but if ever you get thru that, the ep is quite good... i highly recommend it to people (marami dito sa pinas nyan) who associate goth with death metal... congrats Scarlet Tears...

exodus

hi guys. it's either i'm free enough to be typing an entry right now or i'm slightly slacking off hwehehehe ;)

just some updates. our project has been going well, though it's on hold for a couple of weeks due to scheduling. so far, candyaudioline's output has been good (still needs tweaking, of course). we've been having a lot of gigs, too, to the point where i've been exhausted these days. well, to tell the complete truth, it's also because i've been having a lot of extracurriculars lately. been spreading myself too thin, to allan's dismay. sorry!

last monday, we had a gig at Simmerdown, the former Loft in Katipunan. I really like the place: futons on the floor, native sala sets around... just this really laid-back atmosphere. i think it's meant more for their tuesday reggae nights, but they also have rock fests there, and mostly unknown bands, which is good.

we played well, but weren't used to the place and flubbed quite a bit. some of it was my fault hehe and i'd been feeling irritable because of fatigue and kind of stepped on allan's gadget before a song for a joke heehee. that didn't do anything, but well... it was a pretty messed up set :D

anyway, what i really remember that night was the taxi ride to Simmerdown. allan was seated in front while us four petite kids were squished in the back.

kiel and arjay: (eagerly) ah talaga? saan?
allan: selena, sabihin mo kung saan.
selena: sa ________.
arjay, kiel and dennis: (altogether, with different flinching, shocked reactions) HANAKUNGEGRABETALAGA?? shet!
kiel: (exaggerated) ay oo, tahimik dun!
arjay and dennis: ba't kasi dun?
kiel: (slightly relenting) hindi, mas grabe naman yung malibay. no. 1 yun eh... (pause) pero no. 2 yung ______! (laughing)

haha. shit. katakot.

but i'm optimistic about moving out of the house :) independence!

Mayrics Gig, Some Updates, Plus A Few Surprises!!!

candyaudioline played at mayrics last monday. it was one of those gigs wherein we were not really sure if we did well or not. to me it was just one of those gigs that we do just "let-off steam"... you know... pressure, tension, dissatisfaction and loads of other negative-energy-bull-crap that we might've accumulated from each individual members' private as well as collective escapades...

we did enjoy ourselves that night aside from seeing each other once more and getting to meet other friends like guys from moonstar88 and kamikazee, the whole mayrics collective and meeting other some people from the crowd who got to like what candyaudioline was doing...

that night, me and selena had the opportunity to be with an old bandmate. former candy-guitarist took time out to go to mayrics because we was the "lucky dude" who bought herbert moonstar's mint condition boss digital delay (DS5)... nakaka-inis talaga... ang hirap talaga pag wala kang pera... you get to be deprived of a lot of things... okey lang, kay ralph naman napunta eh. anu ba namang hiramin ko yun at pag napamahal na yung gadget sa akin ay hingiin ko nalang as birthday, valentines, christmas at pang-3 kings na gift... d ba ralphot!!! mabait talaga yan eh... d ako mapapahiya dyan... pucha parang kailan lang nag-away tayo ah!!! dapat pala nag-palibre nalang ako kay ralph kahit chicharong bulaklak lang... hay naku. wasted opportunity...

it was really nice seeing them again. d pa rin nagbabago yang si ralph... ayaw ipahalata sa lahat na mayaman na sya... charmaine was also with him. selena and i did some catching up with them and it was quite good to know that they were doing great with their own lives now and that thor -my inaanak- has so far been spared from any illness that infants his age usually catch... they also told us that they went to trista's birthday party and that trista's okay and that she's very very cute na daw lalo... hay naku!!! kung ang mga tao lang sana ay hindi tumitingin sa panlabas na anyo ng iba eh... what a wonderful world it would be... it was nice seeing you again ralph and charmaine...

been thinking quite lately, what would be a good title for a compilation album featuring bands like candyaudioline, tether, populardays, superminty, kings and pawn, soft pillow kisses, the sparks of canada, bagetsafonik and my science project...
"definitely"...

my science project

iba talaga yan studio nyo sam (right infront of alberto's sa anapolis street near nepa q-mart. extremes talaga ang mga nagpapraktis, from showbands to artistas (we felt so bad not seeing ms. heart evengelista last night. ang hirap maka-tyempo, laging delayed ang mga pahiwaeig ng aming mga pakiramdam... pag lalabas kami, papasok naman sya, pag pasok namin saka naman sya lalabas. malas talaga. kahit nga si jericho eh d rin namin na-tyempohan) to really cool bands like superminty, kid auto races..., soul connection, sugar hiccup, soft pillow kisses and of course candyaudioline...

see you all this saturday at mayrics...

we've been practicing

boy, allan, you saying i was busy at work is an understatement.

we practiced last sunday and we're making progress :) they practiced last night, too, only I couldn't go because of the four-letter word. so i'm optimistic about us at Buzz Night.

Buzz Night November 12, 2005... Saturday @ Mayrics

hello everyone!

grabe, sobrang tahimik namin ngayon ah, for the past few weeks, all of us have been very busy with work specially me and selena, as for kel, he's had his bout with the dreaded flu after we got back from boracay five days after the last buzz night. he's fine now. as for dennis, he is also busy looking for new jokes from his textmates. also, he's been helping our new bassist catch-up with us... by the way... we (candyaudioline) have a new bassist. he's name is arjay and he's from another band (poopoo vox) who frequents buzz nights not so long ago. he's had his debut last month and i guess he did well. he also sessions for soft pillow kisses at the moment and also played last month but it was not a pleasant experience... i'm looking forward to playing this month's buzz. last october, i was so sick that i didn't get to enjoy that evenning. plus we've been quite getting back to form - both soft pillow kisses and candyaudioline. as for pillow, its janpol doing drum duties once more...

another update. hopefully, soft pillow kisses, candyaudioline, tether, populardays, superminty, my science project and hopefully kings and pawns could be able to go in the studio to start recording a compilation of sorts. no working title at the moment. i'm keeping my fingers crossed...

here's this month's line-up for Buzz Night!!!

Buzz Night November 12, 2005...

first of all, i would like to thank all the bands who played last month's buzz night... it was quite a successful one i may say and inspite of my being sick last time, i did get glimpses of some of the bands. special mention goes to los chupacabras and easy mersey for their music. also populardays for giving us great performance.

this month's buzz night will be on the 12th, quite early ypu might say compared to what we are usually used to. that's because we might be doing buzz night early this december, either on the 17th or on a friday which i guess would run on the 23rd...

so... some bands have already confirmed interest for this month's buzz night and they are...

los chupacabras
populardays

i'm also putting up the following bands for this month's buzz...

tether
kings and pawns

as for my band...

candyaudioline
soft pillow kisses or superminty

other bands interested to play can text me thru 09209610348...

i'll post a proper sched in the days to come... buzz night is just a week away...

And it happened I was right.

I arrived early at Buzz Night because Allan told Pillow and Candy we were going to practice before the production. Unfortunately, Allan became very sick that day. By the appointed 8:30pm, we were all there except for him and it even looked as if he wasn’t going to be able to show. Oh no!

Also, the bands were not there early. Los Chupacabras were (thank you!), but they wanted to go third (and I had told them they could choose a slot if they were early), so there was still the problem of the first two. The other bands were nowhere to be found yet. Uh-oh.

Ok, so far, I’ve been ending my paragraphs with ominous exclamations. Things did turn around, however, when Allan walked into the door, looking like a large mass of pain. He fell into a chair and asked what the status of the lineup was. Then he said Candyaudioline was up.

The show started at about 9:45pm. Good. But there were very few people, so I was getting worried. Plus, Allan looked like he was he was going to slump over any minute. And we had a new bassist in Arjay (from Poopoo Vox), who was feeling anxious if he had remembered the basslines or not. Eep. But we did surprisingly well… our set was good, we really enjoyed (I was making a fool of myself dancing on the stage, which isn’t a pretty sight and was probably due to my abnormally accelerated metabolism), and the people really enjoyed, too. Good. :) But we sort of flubbed “Felt So Fine” because they decided to brave a new version… Allan said it was pretty much sung the same way, and it was, except that he forgot to tell me that there was no second intro, so I kind of lost the lines somewhere. Woohoo!

Next was supposed to be Bagetsafonik because Doy had to get back to 77 Hemady Café early, but they were having problems with traffic, so I became worried again. Fortunately, my friend Carl said he and his bandmates were getting too drunk and that they could go next. Whew! I can only describe Los Chupacabras as a Parokya ni Edgar with punk and indie sensibilities, though I’m sure that doesn’t do them justice. They’re very irreverent, but fun to watch. I still can’t believe their song “Satan Rules” got them in trouble at Conspiracy Bar, when someone asked them to cut their set because they were eeeeevil. It sounded pretty harmless to me.

Bagets was still caught in traffic and Arjay (who was sessioning for Pillow) had to go home already, so Soft Pillow Kisses took the stage. They were quite rusty, which made me and Charles laugh. Allan by this time was obviously hallucinating onstage, so their set became pretty surreal. But hey, they’re Soft Pillow Kisses, man. You can forgive them for anything!

Finally, Bagetsafonik was up. Aww, I’m such a fan girl. What can I say? I loved their set! It was great to have them back for Buzz Night. The crowd really liked them. Popular Days followed, and people swooned even more. They were really in top form that night, and Charles sang the most perfect and sincere “Watch Out For Me”! I even overheard Ace of Bagets say, Pare, I liked you guys before, but now, I’m just…. Haha! I quote freely, but I just had to say to that, “And I thought I was a fan girl!”

(It was sometime around this point that Allan had to leave because he was feeling terribly ill.)

Next up was Easy Mersey for a Buzz Night comeback. This three-piece did really great sixties-type stuff (sorry, I think the term is “mersey,” but I’m not sure teehee). They’re a lot tighter now and I’m looking forward to them playing again. They were followed by Kings and Pawns, who gave an amazing set as well. Man, keep this up and I’ll be twice the fan girl I already am! Ano na sa complete package? They have it all! We were on a time crunch, but I just had to let them play some extra songs, even if Mayric’s was breathing down my neck for it. Besides, people loved them.

Last band for the night was---- yay!!!--- Tether! They’re back with a new lineup and are as mean as ever! Their new vocalist is skilled, though a little Ashlee Simpson-ish… oh well, that can be fixed. For a first performance, they were really good! Nowhere but up, my friends.

Ok, this isn’t exactly an unbiased account of Buzz Night, but I can’t help but give such a glowing review of it. It was unbelievably fun. Of course, by the end of the night (an early 2:00am! Wow!), I was exhausted and having a bad-hair-everything. It was worth it. I knew something exciting was going to happen at Buzz Night.

Please stand by for photos... probably they'll be up by the end of the week.

Announcement:

I don’t know why, but Buzz is going to be early this month. It’s in two weeks, on November 12. So Buzz Night bands, if you’re reading this and you’d like to be part of it, please text Allan ASAP and let him know so we can settle the lineup early :) Thanks!

I'm excited and nervous about this month's buzz. Somehow, I get the feeling there'll be a few surprises...

Candy gigs!

hi there...

it seems that we've been very quiet for the past few days.... actually, we haven't been completely together for the past few weeks. i just realised that we haven't even played a single gig for quite some time now. the last gig we played was last month's buzz night and that was last september 24 pa... ang tagal na pala. we were suppose to play at mayrics last monday but joel wasn't available and also last oct 3 at 70's bistro but that time, selena was having asthma attacks. i'm beginning to think that we are being cursed... nyeee heeheeehheeee.... hope that's not true...

actually, we still have some gigs lined up for this month... on the 21st of ocotber we'll be playing at INNO Bar (formerly "ten years after"). then on monday the 24th , we'll be at mayrics and on the 29'th will be buzz night... can't wait to play live again...

by the way, we were able to resume practice again last sunday and i'm quite happy about last sunday's session. actually, since i've been having a hard time writing new songs for the past 3 years, i've recently done some changes with a few of our staple faves. we've already manage to do this to three of our songs namely "my silver chair", "don't go away" and "felt so fine". of the three, the one that has undergone the must drastic change has been "my silver chair". the song's indierock/noisepop/metal character has been replaced with a more confident dance-personality. actually, this has become our favourite song of the moment and have been playing it live already. second, the dreaminess of "don't go away" has been replaced by a more sincere easy-listening feel to it. but my current favourite "felt so fine" has also undergone quite a make-over. it's snappy shoegazey-ness has been replaced by a very indiepoppish sound but wait 'til it reaches the instrumental - speedmetal at it's worst hehehehe. just can't wait to do it live...

that's all for now. i'll leave you a few lines from a song by the sprites called "do it yourself"...
"never start a band, with a best friend... never shake hands, never make plans..."

So, let's see what we can talk about. Okay, some thoughts on the issue about rip-offs. In fairness, katunog talaga ng verse! Ang weird nga nung nabasa ko na sabi ng guy na after taking a good look at both songs, they conclude that they each have their merits that make them individual treasures or something like that (i freely paraphrase here, of course). Ngyar. Pero di lang naman sila. Ang daming katunog diyan. i heard that one band denies they've ever heard of "greatest view", even if it was a big hit a few years back. and another parries their own rip-off issue with, "we admit we're fans of this band... that's it."

But here's the thing: Sige, no one can help songs sounding like each other cuz almost everything's been done already... especially if you're a fan and you have a tendency to emulate what you admire. but man, there's a difference between emulating and ripping off. the worst part is that you're making money off this. if you're really fans, shouldn't you be carefully watching out for the degree of rip-off you're doing?

oh well, this is a bit off self-righteous bull, i admit. but it's just common sense. being fans, they should have been able to tell they were getting too close for comfort.

Buzz Night @ Mayrics October 29, 2005

hello again!

here are some of the bands who are comfirmed for this month's Buzz Night!!!

yan lang muna... inaantay ko pa ang iba... hopefully we get to have tether again...

Hmmm. We Are Very Quiet...

hello everyone...

seems that it's been days since our last post... we have been very very quiet recently... so quiet that i'm beginning to get scared... hmmm, why, why, why are we so quiet?

i for one have been very busy for the past couple of weeks and just recently had undergone the traumas of being ripped-off by poeple whom of which i have been very kind to... lesson learned "trust is more of a brand name - for condoms - than something you could easily give to people around you. i lost a cell phone because of me trusting someone who i though was a harmless human being.

i now have been having problems with my bands because i've given my full confidence to people whom i have doubts before but in hoping that they'd appreciate the chance i've given them and would've wisen up but guess what? they are still the same old burden to me and my other bandmates who are one with me in all the things i want to do. when will this problem of mine ever end. i always have this wish that someday i'll have bandmates that will please me in whatever little way they can, trusting my full know-how of things in this little circle that i go about. i get really annoyed when they do things like: making as if they know this or that, coming to practice not prepaired, backing out of a committment at the last minute using very unimaginable excuses, taking for granted promises made. gosh, i could write a whole novel of things that some of my friends and bandmates do that irritates me but there are two things that "really gets my goat". one is when they try covering up their mis-givings by trying to act as if they are totally unaware of their wrong doings and in the process ending up - in my book - as truly dumb poser or to be more accurate, i'll refer to them as "real assholes". second is when they're not listening and would just go about doing what they feel is right. hello... i've known this shit for nearly 20 years and i've been doing this for nearly 10 years, how can i go wrong... okey enough of that... i just hope that someday they'll change. i've been very kind and generous to these people not expecting anything thing in return. all i want is that they respect and value my kindness and generousity.

so what has been happenning to us lately and why have we been so quite?

hmmm... candy was suppoed to have a practice last sunday in preparation for a stint at 70's bistro last night but selena got sick and kel was somehere far away. so i let soft pillow kisses fill in for candyaudioline.

we almost made a fool of ourselves last night... i lost a an E string in the last part of the first song - "it will never last forever" - and our volume was really way too low. the people were quite. really scary. i was able to borrow a guitar from gab of PNE and decided to play "i was right" as the next song but the guitar was not in tune. by this time, the silence of the crowd gave us an idea of what it is like being targets in a "firing squad". good thing i had my tuner with me on stage.t we where able to pull ourselves together by the third song "bathing in the sun". people were listinning to us again. inspite of having problems in singing "stolen flowers" our forth song, people like the song very much. there was even this guy who approached gilbert and me, who bought a copy of "i'd spend my day with you" shaking his head in dis-belief that soft pillow kisses are Filipinos... we dicided to do "stay here for a while" as our last song... we went down the stage truly appreciated and hopefully remembered... hyeh hehehe...

hopefully, selena gets to recover at the soonest possible time. we plan to play at mayrics this October 17, hopefully on the 21st somewhere near ABS-CBN. on the 25th (altough i'm not counting on this)somewhere in malate. and lastly, back to mayrics on the 29th for Buzz Night!!!

last sunday, me and dennis when to greenbelt for a business meeting / contract signing that i had arranged for one of our backbeat bands. then we went to M1 where i was able to get me a copy of another FPJ movie "Roman Rapido"... ang saya saya!!!then we decided to watch a spanish film entitled "Hector"... grabeh ha, atin atin lang ito ha... naiyak po ako!!!

by the way: lets pray for the quake victims of pakistan. let us also pray that we never get to suffer a calamity of the such magnitude...

Kawawa talaga tayo!!!

hello peeps!

been very busy lately with some sidelines. depriving me the chance to share with you some really pissed-off moments and really annoying things that i had encountered during the past few days. the last one happenning just a while ago when our racket went puff just because of people who were very "siguristas". this cost me money amounting to... nevermind, it is very big an amount. to think that it just slipped past me... there goes another boo boo for me...

i just hope that the people responsible for such would be able to find a way to come up with what they wheren't able to produce last night. and that they'd be honest enough to give me what was already mine...

'nuff of that...

we had quite a successful BUZZ NIGHT last sept 24... the crowd was big and the line-up was something to bragg about... but...

ok. i really hate this attitude that bands have when it comes to "performing first". and the best way to avoid playing first in a certain event is to come late or to hide one or two of the members and tell the one in charge that you have one or two members missing... the worst is, kahit na kumpleto na sila, they'll beg the one in charge that they are are still waiting for their "pa-importanteng guest" to arrive... alisin na natin yung ganyang attitude... if we have to go first then so be it. kahit wala pang tao!

first come first play is the way we do things at buzz night and i want to keep it that way. but, because of the way things have been lately, i might impose a "time slot designating" approach wherein bands will be given call times. failure to meet these call times will result in the band being pushed to the rear order of the line-up which could result in them playing last or worst, NOT being able to play at all...

another thing that i hate is when a band don't show up... if you think your band won't be bale to make it. just advice me. ok lang naman eh basta valid yung reason. at least this would give me time to fill in the vacant slot or give the bands present a lot more time to perform...

so here's a short account of what went on during the sept 24, 2005 buzz night...

i arrived late and to my surprise and disgust, no band has performed yet although popular days was already complete, it was pretty obvious that they where being "rock stars" ... pero d uso sa akin ang rock star eh. so i had them play first... 11:15pm na yun charles! minsan lang kayo mauna! i made them play 4 songs taking into account that there were 8 bands up... if only the people from the two absentee bands informed me that they were doing the "no show shit stuff", i could've made popular days do 7 songs instead of just 4... tapos na yun eh... these four songs that popular days played was enough to give me a reason to award them "the best band of the night"... they were truly great that night!!! welcome back "insan"!!!

next up was kings and pawns. it's their 2nd successive buzz appearance... these guys didn't disappoint me. although they were lacking the confidence they displayed the first time they did buzz night, their songs carried them thru... this time, the songs where properly placed one after the other giving the audience a chance to properly digest each song as they went along with their set. unlike the first time around wherein i myself got confused as to what these guys were trying to put across... may sinabi ba sa inyo si BJ? hehehe...

sunsetdrive followed, they're back and 4 piece na sila ulit altough i wasn't able to watch their whole set because i was, from time to time, going in and out of Mayrics trying to get in touch with the guys from Daydream Cycle and Sugar Hiccup. it was really timely that mayrics had just finished having their PA system repaired. ayun, lumabas tuloy ang bigat ng tugtugan nila... as usual, another great set for these guys...

candyaudioline came next. to tell you the truth, feeling ko talaga magkakalat kami because we haven't practiced for quite some time na. taking into account that bago yung bahista namin and the night before, we did a somewhat amaturish set in the same venue. well, according to those present, we did very well. even i was a bit surprised that we delivered a very tight, almost flawless set.

soft pillow kisses followed. for most part, nakakahiya kami!!! pero okey lang kasi masaya pa rin. our singer was so drunk that i was almost sure that it was sid vicious and not eloha who was with me singing that night. it's not that she'd sang out of tune. it's just that, as if she was "somewhere else". aside from that, charles broke a string and my guitar was "trying to declare independence"... gilbert was having a hard time remembering the songs. i think he was drinking too. only lara was the steady one... although we were able to pull ourselves together by the 4th song "i don't know what to say". by the time we were doing the 5th song "i was right", we were back to our soft-pillow-selves... it was during the beginning of the last song "vodka ice #3" until it's end that we became gods once more. hehehe... kapal mo talga allan!!!

last band to play was my science project... now they are beginning to become what they have been attempting to do for quite some time now -- "a respectable indiepop band". konti pa dennis and company... lambutan nyo pa at konting ayos pa sa mga songs. try to be more unique as you possibly can. always bear in mind that soft pillow kisses and superminty are both quite unique and still at the top of everything else...

i would like to thank all those who where at buzz night. matagal na rin natin d napupuno ang mayrics. special mention goes to eric of popular days for that really cute poster he did, to kel for updating me while i was at work, to BJ for giving us Kings and Pawns who let us borrow their guitar. thanks...

that's all for now... next time, i'll write something about the newest, "in" thing happening in the local mainstream music scene. do you know what it is?

i'll be leaving you with a line which is not to be read but should be sung to the tune of the chorus of an obscure song by The Care called "Chandelier"...

Amen"

Ruining it and stating the obvious

Hi everyone! FINALLY! Woohoo! I’ve been too busy at work to post and too tired during the weekends, but I’m glad I’m finally taking some time out to write this. I’m typing this Sunday night, though the time stamp tomorrow will say I posted it on Monday morning. Enough quibbling, though.

We had a great Buzz Night last night. The really pissy part was that Sugar Hiccup and Daydream Cycle didn’t show up, thought they had confirmed earlier, and they didn’t even let us know that they’d back out. I think that disappointed some people who specifically came for them, but I guess they had their reasons, which may remain a mystery for who knows how long… Anyway, these drawbacks weren’t enough to bring us down as we had a couple of really great acts lined up that night. Kings and Pawns gave a great performance again (love that song with the seemingly dissonant lead guitar and bass parts), and so did Popular Days!!! Jann Paul is alive again and Charles’s voice last night was positively gorgeous! I swear! Soft Pillow Kisses also did a great “Vodka Ice # 3” that enchanted everyone. I won’t go into more detail because Allan said he’d do the review, but let’s just say we really enjoyed last night.

The August ish of MTV Ink has finally come out and it has most of Allan’s interview about productions, namely, Buzz Night. Looking it over a few nights ago, I couldn’t stop laughing because Allan’s answers make him look like this mercenary asshole, especially his answer to the question What do you do it for?: “I do it for the money.”

Now, this isn’t a case of bad editing on the author’s part because I do remember that Allan wrote that, and he even posted it on this blog a while back :) The article was pretty faithful to the answers he had submitted. But it tickles me that he comes off as such a prick in this interview. He was ever so slightly worried about that because his reputation has always been kind of shot, and this digs his grave a little deeper, but I told him, what’s a little more dirt? Actually, his answers strike me as maverick… very indie *toothy grin here*. Liiiiiiiiiiiiike. Hehe. Arrogance suits Allan in every way.

Anyway, I still believe with conviction that he is the cliché of the giant softie. But of course, you’ll have to see it to believe it.

+++

We played last night, of course, but we haven’t been practicing due to sked conflicts. Still, it was a great, if hurried, set. It felt sooooooooooooo good. Hopefully, we’ll be spending more studio time in the coming days to complete the repertoire.

After Buzz Night, the gang went to Colasa’s for a chorizo food trip. God, I missed those! Jann Paul and Gilbert were back, too, so it was a revival of old times :) Ang nakakatuwa pa, the waiter sat us upstairs in the smoking section, where there was actually a videoke machine set up! I was choking on the perpetual cloud of smoke, but became giddily happy when I finally was able to sing New order’s “Regret” on videoke. Yay!!! We sang a couple more songs before calling it a morning.

Busy Pa Rin...

hello everyone.

quiet pa rin ang blog natin save for dennis' post na talaga namang nakaka-aliw... yang si dennis ay nakaka-aliw talaga. magkakasama kami nung monday with fellow candymates kel and joel sa mayrics. tutugtog sana kami nun but joel could not make it before 9pm that night. so i just called them to be at mayrics so that we could pratcice at around 11pm there while waiting for kamikazee's slot... d nga matuloy yung practice eh, so the boys decided to wait for my work to finish. after that we went straight to colasa's to be entertained by dennis' ritualistic manner of eating. (you guys should see it for yourselves. it's monumentally entertaining) grabe... bigla nalang pumasok sa isip ko itong idea about movie titles and dennis' love for rice... ayun, i think we were able to make up more than 30 album titles if dennis was to star in those movies most of which were taken from FJP's titles. it was so funny that me, joel and kel almost busted our heads laughing.

there so many titles blurted out that time but i forgot most of them. here are some that i still recall:

Iyo ang ulam, akin ang kanin (Iyo ang Tondo akin ang Cavite)
batas ng rice (batas ng 45)
kahit konti pang rice (Kahit Konting Pagtingin)
Shake rattle and rice (Shake, Rattle and Roll)

scorpio rice 1 and 2 (Scporpio Nights 1 and 2)
kanin sa banga (Halimaw sa Banga)
wild wild rice (Wild Wild West)
les mise-rice (Les Miserables)
lord of the rice (lord of the rings)

ang dami pa pero d ko na maalala... ang lupit mo talaga dens... tama na muna yun... mamaya nga pala candyaudioline will be playing at mayrics to morrow naman buzz night... hay naku... post ako ng masmari ulit as soon as i'm not busy na...

The Week That Was Again...

at last, my phone's been reconnected. wala lang...

okey... let's see... what's been happening with candyaudioline lately... not much really. but last thursday and friday we did some short practice sessions to help update joel of tether - who has been doing a great job as our current bassist for the meantime. during these sessions, we did some fooling around with some songs specially on "my silver chair" and in the process transforming this headbanging monster to a "butt-shaking-hip-swaying" dance number... actually it's our favourite baby right now... in fact, we even played it last saturday during our gig at Conspiracy.

speaking of that conspiracy gig. it could've been a great gig if only selena was there. she wasn't able to make it at the last minute because of a personal commitment. this got me really nervous because it's been more than a year since i've sang solo for candyaudioline. i had to drink one bottle of red horse to calm myself - straw and all. according to concerned friends, we did very well but for me, of the seven songs we did, i think i flunked in three. specially in "flaming walls" wherein i got confused as to sing it in it's original version or to sing it ala snow patrol... but i think it all went well and we really had a great time. eventhough the technician kept begging us to turn our guitars down (my god, my heart beat was more louder than my guitar during that gig)... we did miss selena on that one... after that we ate at colasa's and went home...

tonight we'll be at 7o's bistro. we'll be doing another stripped-down set. we're excited because we'll be playing a different, dancey "my silver chair" to a crowd to whom some are very familiar with the heavy version of the song...

that's all for now...

Buzz Night last Saturday

What made last Saturday’s gig great was the bunch of fresh talent that cropped up. It was fortunate, too. What would Buzz Night be without the last-minute lineup disasters we’ve come to know so well? Three of our regular bands, Popular Days, Tether and Sunset Drive, had to back out a few days before the gig because of unavailable members, the first band on the night itself, even. No matter… Allan somehow was able to get the elusive Shimmer and Nyctynasty to play, and the reliable My Science Project arrived to help us out, too, despite their own lineup hassles.

First up was newcomer Inhaler, who played some indie rock. I like the promise of how they play their guitars and the lazy vocals. It reminds me of some of the cool stuff that used to trickle onto MTV in the early 90s. Sigh, nostalgia trip hehehe. Also, one of the guys was actually a senior in my freshman year in high school, so I couldn’t help but remember those uncertain but exciting times for me. Side story: In our high school caf, there was this table way down in the corner that was exclusively for senior guys. One day, at lunch, one of my innocent batchmates put his tray down at that table and some senior guys arrived, indignant at this sacrilege. One of the guys mouthing off was the future Inhaler vocalist, and I think at that moment he epitomized that age-old “Seniors-are-gods” rule for me. Hehehe. I know this totally pegs him as a bully, but people grow up, believe it or not. Anyway, all seniors are dicks to freshmen. That’s the pecking order. By the way, Allan said they should do more stuff like their third song, the slow one… parang Teenage Fanclub daw tsaka bagay sa kanila.

Shimmer played next and I liked them. Their songs are a bit more conventional, but they have priceless moments within and I think some other people noticed they were good. I bet they could kick the asses of the current local popular bands if they hit mainstream. In any case, I was grateful they showed up at short notice and I enjoyed their set.

Soft Pillow Kisses followed. For once, they played early because Charles has work these days. Great set. They’re really in fine form now. It’s funny about that old Pulp issue Allan was talking about because shortly after that pictorial in 2003, Gilbert joined his mainstream band and the lineup was broken, so it was never fully realized, especially since Eloha “left” after that as well. So when we looked at the pic and saw that it was the current lineup, it really seemed providential. Wow. They’re doing well and are more stable as a unit. Good luck to you guys.

Kings and Pawns, find of the night from Las Pinas, did their thing after that. I really liked their lo-fi songs. It was very refreshing to hear a band like that at Buzz Night again. Plus, I love their attitude onstage. Just the right amount of indifference without the arrogance and hostility so weirdly revered in scenes in which you’d think they belong. True transcendence. I really, really wish they’d come back next Buzz. Really.

Nyctynasty followed it up with their “kinky core”… at least, that’s what Tether Beejay calls it. He played bass for them that night. They are amazing with their guitars, but what I can’t get over is how cute they were. You girls are just so damned cute. I know all this fawning over your appearance is probably going to make you puke, but I can’t help it. If I were a guy, I’d be in love with you.

Next, Candyaudioline played. Thanks to Joel, who risked a relapse of hypertension just to not let us down. Did a few unexpected songs and a few staples.
Finally, a three-piece My Science Project took the stage. Fighting Spirit Award talaga kayo. Although a lot of their songs had to sound really basic, I still enjoyed your set. Hope next time won’t be a short-notice thing anymore.

All in all, a good gig. Lots of promise and affirmation. We’ll work on it, don’t worry.
